Diabol tasmánsky
Diabol tasmánsky je zavalité zvieratko. Má hnedočiernu srsť a vzhľadom trochu pripomína malého medveďa. Na krku má biely „podbradník“, po bokoch a vzadu na chrbte má tiež škvrny bielej farby. Rypáčik je ružovkastý. Má masívnu hlavu s dobre vyvinutými žuvacími svalmi. Zuby (najmä stoličky) sú mohutné, prispôsobené na drvenie kostí. Odkedy vakovlk vyhynul, diabol tasmánsky sa stal najväčším vačnatým dravcom.
V súčasnosti sa nachádza len na Tasmánii, hoci fosílne nálezy ukazujú, že obýval väčšinu Austrálskeho kontinentu. Predpokladá sa, že príčinou toho, že na kontinente vyhynul, bola konkurencia introdukovaného (privezeného kolonizátormi) psa dinga. Diable tasmánske sú v Tasmánii dosť početné okrem oblastí, kde ľudia ich pôvodný habitat zničili (napr. keď vyklčovali stromy). Najpočetnejšie sú vo vresoviskách pri pobreží. Obývajú lesy mierneho pásma a dažďové lesy.
Latinské meno diabla tasmánskeho - Sarcophilus harrisii - v doslovnom preklade znamená Harrisov milovník mäsa. Ako prišiel tento živočích k svojmu zvláštnemu menu? Po prvýkrát ho opísal britský úradník G.P.R.Harris v roku 1808. Napísal, že je to divoké a krvilačné zviera, "samec aj samica, ktoré som choval niekoľko mesiacov zviazané ťažkou reťazou v sude, spolu neustále bojovali“. Takže zvieratá, ktoré boli týrané, držané na malom priestore a pravdepodobne ich aj nedostatočne kŕmili, si svojím správaním „vyslúžili“ nelichotivé meno, pod ktorým ich dnes poznáme.
Diablovi tasmánskemu teda nespravodlivo prischla nálepka divokého surového zvieraťa. V skutočnosti väčšiu korisť - vombaty, ovce alebo zajace - uprednostňuje v stave mršiny (mŕtve). Je to veľmi výkonný mrchožrút, zožerie dokonca aj kosti a srsť. Ostatné zložky potravy ako sú hmyz, larvy hmyzu a hady zožerie, keď na ne natrafí. Potravu si zháňa v noci, nemotorne sa pohybujúc po lese. Deň trávi v hniezdach v brlohoch, ktoré si budujú aj samice, aj samce. Robia si ich z kôry, trávy a listov. Brlohy si robia v dutinách spadnutých stromov, jaskyniach alebo norách.
Je to samotársky živočích. Príležitostne, keď sa stretne viac zvierat pri zdroji potravy (napr. pri mršine), reagujú na seba agresívne, ale inak neprejavujú teritoriálne správanie. Keď bojujú, diable vrčia a vyjú. Zdá sa, že sa u nich prejavuje hierarchické správanie, prinajmenšom keď sú chované v zajatí.
Párenie prebieha v marci. Gravidita trvá okolo mesiaca, samica vrhne 2 - 4 mláďatá. Mláďatá prejdú do matkinho vaku, kde zostanú ďalšie 3 - 4 mesiace. Vo veku 8 mesiacov sú už samostatné. Dožívajú sa asi 8 rokov.
